A 5.9 magnitude earthquake has struck central Chile, about 129 kilometres north north-west of Concepcion, the US Geological Survey reported, but there were no reports of any damage.

“There have been no reports of any injuries or damage to infrastructure,” a spokeswoman for state emergency office Onemi said.

“A tsunami has been ruled out.”

The tremor, at a depth of 25 kilometres, was in the same region as a massive 8.8 magnitude quake and ensuing tsunamis that battered Chile a year ago, ravaging towns and roads and killing hundreds.
