6.1 Quake Strikes Off Fiji No Tsunami Alert
An earthquake registering a magnitude of 6.1 has reportedly struck south of the Fiji Islands.
The seismic movement was recorded at 6.36pm (AEST) at a depth of 573km.
The information has not yet been finalised, however the US Geological Survey recorded the quake as a 5.3 magnitude at a depth of 547km.
It is believed no tsunami alert has been issued.
A Geoscience Australia spokesman has previously said earthquakes were common in the area.
“Earthquakes of this magnitude are not at all unusual in that part of the world, and it was very, very deep so it’s something unlikely to have any impact on the surface,” he said.
