A 6.2-MAGNITUDE earthquake hit today in an area of north-eastern Japan jolted by a massive quake and tsunami disaster earlier this month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake struck at 6.15pm (AEDT) about 417 kilometres north-east of Tokyo, at a depth of 39.6 kilometres, the USGS said.

The epicentre was off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, where a huge tsunami swept away houses and thousands of people on March 11.
No tsunami warning was issued following the quake, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
