Guatemala Volcano Ready to Blow

One of Guatemala’s active volcanoes, Fuego, is rumbling at a greater-than-usual rate, the emergency services office said Saturday.

The volcano is seeing 12-15 small explosive events per hour, the office said, citing a report from the National Seismological Institute.

A station owner at Mooloo Downs, more than 200 kilometres east of Carnarvon, expects to have lost a significant number of cattle.

Rivers of Fire in Mexico Blast

A massive blast along a state-owned pipeline in central Mexico killed 27 people, injured 52 others, and engulfed dozens of homes in a raging inferno, officials said.

Puebla state secretary Valentin Meneses said the pre-dawn explosion occurred along the Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) pipeline in the town of Texmelucan, where thieves were trying to steal fuel. Early indications suggested it was caused by a perforation of the pipeline during the attempted theft.

Lightning blasted holes up to four metres wide in Melbourne house roofs as a severe storm hit the city’s south-east overnight.

Emergency services responded to about 40 calls for assistance at Aspendale as a severe storm and waves of heavy rain hit the suburb.

The 30 metre monohull and its crew of 11 have spent the past two weeks preparing for the campaign against the Japanese whaling fleet.

Australia: Locals Rescued From Roof

Thirty people have been rescued by helicopter from the roof of a property near Gascoyne Junction, 950 kilometres north of Perth, as flooding continues in parts of Western Australia.

Another six people were rescued after becoming stranded at Yalgoo, east of Geraldton.

AFP – Rescuers searched for survivors after an overcrowded boat carrying around 150 people capsized on a river in northeastern Bangladesh leaving at least 37 dead, all of them women and children.

Local police chief Jane Alam said most passengers were asleep as the boat rammed a cargo vessel and sank Saturday night in the middle of the river Surma at Alipur, 240 kilometres (160 miles) northeast of the capital Dhaka.

LOS ANGELES – A series of winter storms bearing down on California Saturday was threatening parts of the state with flooding, and officials were posting mudflow warnings in areas recently affected by wildfires ahead of this weekend’s rains.

Southern California will be hit especially hard by the storms, and officials were preparing for possible mudslides in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

LONDON (Reuters) – Snow brought chaos to Britain’s transport network on Saturday on the last weekend before Christmas, normally one of the busiest days of the year for travel and shopping.

Most of western Britain, Northern Ireland and northern Scotland suffered blizzards, while heavy snow fell on London and the south, with up to 20 cm (7.9 inches) expected in places.

Nearly 2,000 protesters were detained during the December 2009 summit, and 250 took their case to court claiming their civil rights were abused.

California Approves US Climate Plan

California has approved the most sweeping US plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, acting on its own against climate change as proposed nationwide plans flounder in Washington.

The largest US state, which would be the world’s eighth largest economy if a country, will from 2012 start a “cap-and-trade” system under which industry will be required to cut emissions but can trade credits on a new market.

The quake has residents scared that more quakes will soon take place. The earthquake’s epicenter was in the sea region of the island. The focal depth appears to be around 103 km.

BERLIN – Heavy overnight snowfall disrupted air travel across western Europe Friday, forcing more than 800 flight cancellations and leading to major delays in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Germany appeared the hardest hit by the snow, with more than 600 flights canceled, schools forced to close and highways clogged with traffic after scores of accidents that killed at least three people and injured dozens.
