Activists Cause Stink With Whalers

Environmental activists threw paint and foul smelling acid at whaling ships in the Antarctic ocean in a fresh bid to halt the annual hunt, Japanese authorities said Thursday.

The Institute of Cetacean Research, a quasi-public body that runs Japan’s whaling programmes, said members of militant environmentalist group Sea Shepherd threw bottles of paint and butyric acid, found in rancid butter, at the Yushin Maru No. 2.

Canada Withdraws From Kyoto

Canada became the first country to formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, saying the pact on cutting carbon emissions was preventing the world from effectively tackling climate change.

“We are invoking Canada’s legal right to formally withdraw from Kyoto,” Environment Minister Peter Kent said following a marathon UN climate conference in South Africa, at which nations agreed to a new roadmap for worldwide action.

Activists Unhappy At Climate Deal

European ministers say they have made a significant step in securing a deal to draw up a new international climate treaty, but campaigners warned it would not be enough to tackle global warming.

The deal, which was finally agreed as UN climate talks in Durban, South Africa, overran by almost 36 hours, commits all countries – including major polluters the US and China – to negotiate a legally enforceable treaty on cutting emissions by 2015.

China Wants Kyoto Extension

China, the world’s top greenhouse gas emitter, said Tuesday it will push at next week’s climate talks for an extension of the Kyoto Protocol, which requires rich nations to reduce their emissions.

Beijing’s top climate negotiator Xie Zhenhua also called on wealthy nations to hammer out a funding mechanism to help developing countries implement efforts to address global warming at the Durban meeting.

Greenpeace activists on Friday spilled black ink on the door of Chevron’s Rio office to protest the oil spill at an offshore well operated by the US energy giant off the Brazilian coast.

“Chevron: your trash, our problem,” read one of the placards waved by one the militants of the environmental watchdog outside the Chevron office in central Rio.

Greenpeace has lashed out at allegations made by a legislator that one of its top British activists managed to skirt an entry ban into Indonesia by using a false passport.

Nur Hidayati, Greenpeace’s country representative for Indonesia, said on Tuesday that Andy Tait entered the country using a valid passport and that attempts to deport him last Saturday failed because the purported entry ban was riddled with errors.

Greenpeace Paints Trawlers Green

Greenpeace activists on Monday painted “Stop Subsidies” in large white letters on the side of four fishing trawlers in Spain’s northwestern port of Vigo to denounce overfishing.

The trawlers use nets that are dragged across the seabed to capture their catch, a method that Greenpeace said “destroys everything in its path”.

US toy giant Mattel, maker of the world-famous Barbie doll, has decided to use more environmentally friendly materials in its packaging after months of criticism from Greenpeace.

The California-based company said Wednesday it hopes to source 70 percent of its paper packaging from recycled material or sustainable fiber by the end of the year, with the goal rising to 85 percent by the end of 2015.

The United Nations urged the world’s cities on Monday to protect their trees, saying they can ease fallout from natural disasters and can help a metropolis mitigate the effects of climate change.

“Good practices in urban and peri-urban forestry can contribute to building a resilient city in terms of mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change,” a senior official at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said in a statement.

“24 Hours of Reality” will broadcast a presentation by Al Gore every hour for 24 hours across 24 different time zones from Wednesday to Thursday, with the aim of convincing climate change deniers and driving action against global warming among households, schools and businesses.

No Compensation For Ivory Coast

Five years after the dumping of toxic waste by oil-trading group Trafigura affected more than 100,000 people in Ivory Coast, thousands still await compensation, Amnesty International said Friday.

“It is unacceptable that so many people who were affected by the dumping have not received the compensation money they are entitled to,” said Benedetta Lacey, AI’s special advisor on corporate accountability.
