Power Station Plotters Walk Free

A group of climate change activists who were convicted of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass after they planned to shut down the UK’s second largest power station have walked free from court.

The group were among more than 100 people arrested when police raided the Iona School in Sneinton, Nottingham, on the morning of Easter Monday, April 13, last year.

WIKILEAKS: Leaked US government documents show Australian officials were willing to accept a compromise deal with Japan over whaling – despite then-environment minister Peter Garrett, publicly rejecting the idea.

Fairfax newspapers say documents obtained by WikiLeaks show Mr Garrett’s former chief of staff, David Williams, told the US Australia could accept a deal.

The 30 metre monohull and its crew of 11 have spent the past two weeks preparing for the campaign against the Japanese whaling fleet.

A Danish court ruled on Thursday that police illegally detained 250 demonstrators during last year’s U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen.

Nearly 2,000 protesters were detained during the December 2009 summit, and 250 took their case to court claiming their civil rights were abused.

Environmentalists Sue ExxonMobil

Two environmental groups have announced a lawsuit against oil giant ExxonMobil, claiming the company’s Houston, Texas-area oil refinery and chemical plant complex has generated illegal amounts of air pollution.

The Sierra Club and Environment Texas filed the suit Tuesday in federal district court against ExxonMobil and two subsidiaries, alleging that “equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, and other non-routine incidents at the Baytown Complex since 2005 have resulted in the release of more than eight million pounds of pollutants into the surrounding air, frequently in violation of legal limits.”

Hundreds of supporters and opponents of a controversial plan to build a petrochemical complex clashed in central Taiwan Tuesday as the government held a public hearing into the project.

The two opposing forces used poles and protest banners to poke at each other outside the township hall in Tacheng, Changhua county, in the hours before the hearing.

German Nuclear Shipment Protest

Around 2,500 people on Saturday took to the streets of Germany, organisers said, to protest against a shipment of radioactive waste from France expected next week.

Police put the number of protesters in the northern German coastal town of Greifswald at around 850 but Ulrich Soeffker, a green party representative, told AFP it was more like 2,500.

Protest Halts Dutch Power Project

A protest by Greenpeace halted work Wednesday on a coal-fired power station in the Netherlands which the environmental group said would increase the country’s carbon-dioxide emissions by a quarter.

Some 20 activists occupied cranes being used to build the plant at Eemsmond on the shores of the Wadden Sea, two of them spending the night in a tent slung 70 metres (220 feet) up between three cranes in temperatures below freezing, Agnes de Rooij, head of Greenpeace’s Energy and Climate campaign, said.

Environmental group Sea Shepherd has offered a reward of $NZ11,500 to catch the “cowards” who clubbed 23 seals to death at a New Zealand tourist spot.

The slaughter of the protected animals at the Ohau Point seal colony, near the South Island town of Kaikoura, had shocked New Zealanders, Sea Shepherd spokeswoman Lisa Baines said.

Thousands of leftist activists and Mexican peasants took to the streets Tuesday of the beach resort of Cancun to protest against the climate accord being negotiated by more than 190 countries.

Waving rainbow and green flags, the demonstrators beat drums and played flutes as they set off on a 20-kilometer (12-mile) march from the center of Cancun to the guarded luxury hotel where talks were underway.
