Around 1630 BC, a super-volcano blew apart the Aegean island of Santorini, an event so violent that some theorists say it nurtured the legend of Atlantis.

More than three and a half millennia later, the big blast is yielding forensic clues which help the search to predict future cataclysmic eruptions, scientists said on Wednesday.

Overgrazed Fields Promote Locusts

Posted by redsky On January - 29 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Swarming locusts may be drawn to overgrazed fields because the insects prefer to feed on low-nitrogen plants in areas where the soil is depleted, US and Chinese researchers said Thursday.

In bad years, locust swarms can inhabit as much as 20 percent of the Earth’s surface, particularly in Asia and Africa, and negatively impact the livelihoods of one in 10 people, according to the article in the journal Science.

A team of French and Australian oceanographers have discovered the seabirds in the Southern Ocean have four times the mercury levels of aquatic birds elsewhere.

The toxic element has come from both man-made and naturally occurring sources and while the birds seem to be coping, the same cannot be said for the region’s fish.

An environmental monitor Tuesday identified 19 new sites across the United States where groundwater near coal-ash dumps from power plants was found to be contaminated with arsenic and other pollutants.

The Environmental Integrity Project said the pollution — in some cases more than 10 times the maximum contaminant level for arsenic — is a direct health threat to thousands of residents who live near plants which use coal.

Red Tide Shuts Oyster Industry

Posted by redsky On December - 14 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

PORT LAVACA, Texas – In better days, the loading dock in this East Texas harbor city would be a bustle of activity: fishermen unloading sacks filled with fresh oysters, dealers paying by the sack for the bivalves, 18-wheelers hauling them to Florida, Virginia and other destinations.

On an afternoon last month, the dock was quiet. A handful of fishermen lingered by their boats, swapping rumors and lamenting the fate of their industry.

Yellowstone – A Global Disaster

Posted by redsky On December - 6 - 2011 1 COMMENT

“Supervolcano: Eruption” (Roc), by Harry Turtledove: The master of the alternate history novel delivers a terrifying future of the United States that seems within the realm of possibility in “Supervolcano: Eruption.”

Yellowstone National Park draws millions each year to see its bubbling pots and spouting geysers. Yellowstone’s caldera, a broad, craterlike basin of a volcano, formed by an explosion or by the collapse of the cone, has erupted several times since the North American continent drifted over the hot spot.

The threat to climate change posed by thawing permafrost, which could release stocks of stored carbon, is greater than estimated, a group of scientists said on Wednesday.

Toxic Timebomb In South Africa

Posted by redsky On November - 29 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

We meet Mariette Lieferink in a McDonalds near Gauteng, on the edge of Johannesburg, buying a dozen sickly sweet drinks. She’s no one’s idea of a leading environmental activist. She wears a tight-fitting, scarlet, embroidered Chinese dress, high heels, and make-up. She is nearly 60, a mother of four, grandmother of two and she used to be a preacher. Now she is head of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment, and works flat out to clean up the massively polluted mining areas of Johannesburg.

Volcano To Create New Island

Posted by redsky On November - 15 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Over the past week or so, the geological upheaval in the Canary Islands has caused jets of water to rise more than 20 metres into the air and locals claim to have even seen rocks thrown out of the sea. Measurements taken by researchers show that seething water is significantly warmer than the surrounding sea. The culprit is the Canarian hotspot — the islands are underlain by a deep magma plume that is believed to have first appeared 60 million years ago.
