The wards’ low-income group people are especially exposed to arsenic related diseases as they drink and use water from those tubewells to meet daily necessities.

HIGH levels of a cancer-causing heavy metal and arsenic have been discovered in a river and reservoir in the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Despite efforts to dilute the pollution, carcinogenic cadmium still remained at three times permitted levels in the reservoir at Lalang Hydroelectric Dam on the Longjiang River on Thursday afternoon, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.

A team of French and Australian oceanographers have discovered the seabirds in the Southern Ocean have four times the mercury levels of aquatic birds elsewhere.

The toxic element has come from both man-made and naturally occurring sources and while the birds seem to be coping, the same cannot be said for the region’s fish.

An environmental monitor Tuesday identified 19 new sites across the United States where groundwater near coal-ash dumps from power plants was found to be contaminated with arsenic and other pollutants.

The Environmental Integrity Project said the pollution — in some cases more than 10 times the maximum contaminant level for arsenic — is a direct health threat to thousands of residents who live near plants which use coal.

The Northern Territory Health Department says water in the Lake Bennett area is mostly fine for household use, despite containing arsenic levels more than 20 times above safe guidelines.

The Environment Department says two private bores in the area had levels well above the safe limit, and a main supply tank had arsenic levels 22 times the safe amount.

Volcanic lakes that are a primary source of freshwater to at least 4.5 million Latin American citizens have been found teeming with arsenic. The poisonous element leached into the water from sediment around the lakes.

Ohio University researcher Dina López has been investigating Lake Ilopango in El Salvador. It’s a six-mile-wide caldera with high concentrations of elements characteristic of volcanic systems, such as lithium, boron, and arsenic.

The national product quality watchdog has found heavy metal elements in some toy products, which experts say can accumulate in children’s bodies and cause chronic poisoning if they are absorbed.

A recent spot-check by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine showed that lead and chrome were found in toy products, China Central Television (CCTV) reported Sunday.

The New Taipei City Department of Agriculture has launched an investigation into allegations that arsenic-tainted fish are being distributed for sale to wet markets in the Taipei area.

The media report that made the allegations added that officials and consumers were both unaware that the fish had been caught from an area where fish are contaminated and should not be consumed.

Excessive Arsenic in Vietnam Water

More than a quarter of drinking wells in Vietnam’s densely-populated Red River delta contain unsafe levels of arsenic that can cause cancer, neurological problems and hypertension, researchers warned on Tuesday.

In a paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they also said 44 percent of the wells in the delta carried levels of manganese that exceed World Health Organization guidelines.

Indo: 65 Rivers Contain Toxic Metals

At least five lakes and 65 rivers across the country were contaminated as a result of human activity last year, the country’s leading environmental group says.

Mukri Friatna, head of advocacy for the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi), said on Monday that the figure for rivers found to be polluted was up from 53 in 2009.

Dead Sea Air Contains Mercury

The atmosphere over the Dead Sea, researchers have found, is laden with oxidized mercury. Some of the highest levels of oxidized mercury ever observed outside the polar regions exist there.

The results appear in a paper published on-line November 28th in the journal Nature Geoscience.
