Future U.S. heat waves will be worse

The nation is headed for strong heat waves in coming decades that will hit cities and farmers and threaten wildlife with extinction, a new global warming report warns.

The report, “More Extreme Heat Waves: Global Warming’s Wake Up Call,” sponsored by medical, environmental and civil rights organizations, comes as a legislative fight over a climate change bill gets ready to resume next month in Congress. Australia heatwave claims 37 lives

As the Arctic freeze sweeps Britain, a record-breaking heatwave in Australia has claimed the lives of 37 people and sparked bushfiresthat have destroyed 29 homes.
South Australia and Victoria have been the worst affected, enduring six consecutive days of temperatures reaching 113F (45C).

The extreme conditions in Melbourne caused an electricity substation to explode, shutting down the city’s train network, trapping people in lifts and resulting in thousands of people being treated for heat exhaustion.

Emergency services have gone to high alert in southeast Australia as the region’s worst heatwave in a century sent temperatures soaring and residents scurrying for cover.

Authorities warned elderly, sick and infant residents of the states of Victoria and South Australia to stay home and keep cool as the mercury was tipped to hit 44 degrees Celsius (112 Fahrenheit), raising the spectre of heatstroke and wildfires.
