Mexico was shaken Monday afternoon by a strong apparent aftershock from a powerful earthquake late last month.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries from the quake, which had an initial magnitude of 6.3.

A fishing boat lost during the Japanese tsunami disaster a year ago has turned up off Canada’s west coast.

The 65-metre vessel was first spotted on Tuesday last week by a Canadian Forces aircraft on a routine surveillance patrol, but an aerial inspection has since suggested there was no-one on board.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit central and southern Mexico on Tuesday, collapsing at least 60 homes near the epicenter and a pedestrian bridge in the capital where people fled shaking office buildings in fear.

One of the strongest to shake Mexico since the deadly 1985 temblor that killed thousands in Mexico City, Tuesday’s earthquake sent fear and panic across the region, especially after a less powerful, magnitude-5.1 aftershock was felt in the capital and several other aftershocks around the borders of Oaxaca and Guerrero near the epicenter.

Leaking US Reactor Shut Down

..A reactor at the San Onofre nuclear power plant near San Diego has been shut down after a radiation leak which was not big enough to cause public harm, the US atomic safety agency said Wednesday.

Radioactive gas escaped from a pipe in a building located next to the reactor on Tuesday evening, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Tuesday announced a 2.6-billion-dollar program to help victims of a record drought, including food and water handouts, as rural victims protested in the capital.

The “unprecedented sum would attend to a catastrophic situation in Mexico,” Calderon said during a public act. The aim “is that no family is without water or food due to this drought.”

85 Dolphins Stranded At Cape Cod

At least 85 dolphins have beached themselves in a shallow inlet of a US nature reserve at Cape Cod, officials said Tuesday, adding that the cause of the mass strandings remained a mystery.

A spokesman for the International Fund for Animal Welfare said the huge number of beached mammals over the last two weeks, with most of them dying, was close to the amount usually recorded in the course of a year.

AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 6.2 struck off the coast of central Chile toady, not far from the town of Concepcion devastated two years ago by a quake and tsunami, US experts said.

The quake struck at a depth of 19 kilometers (12 miles) and was 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Concepcion, the US Geological Survey said.
