A family of four has died under a landslide in Fiji, as forecasters predict lingering torrential rain in the flood-battered region.

Police told FBC News a 35-year-old father, 30-year-old mother and their two daughters, aged three and one, were buried alive under the landslide in Ba on the island of Viti Levu yesterday morning.

Kiribati President Anote Tong told The Associated Press on Friday that his Cabinet this week endorsed a plan to buy nearly 6,000 acres on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu.

Sydney was thrown into chaos Thursday after the city’s heaviest rainfall in five years sparked widespread flash flooding and forced the closure of railway lines and dozens of roads.

Large tracts of Australia’s most populous state New South Wales are under water, with Sydney feeling the force of a La Nina weather system as an estimated 119 millimetres (4.7 inches) of rain fell on the city — the highest daily total since 2007.

Experts said the spiders may be spinning the sticky webs to help them survive the deluge, which has forced thousands of people to leave their homes over the past week.

Hundreds of anxious residents from St George in southern inland Queensland are being housed in Dalby on the state’s Western Downs until the worst of the floods are over.

About 350 St George residents, many of them children, are at the Dalby showgrounds, while another 40 displaced are being put up down the road at a Police Citizens Youth and Club.

WELLINGTON — Two farmers were killed and more than 700 people evacuated as torrential rain flooded large parts of Fiji’s main island Viti Levu, officials said Tuesday.

Roads to the western part of the island were cut after days of heavy rain and 715 people were sheltering in evacuation centres, the Pacific nation’s information ministry said.
