CANBERRA, Australia — The U.S. Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6 has struck the South Pacific off the coasts of Tonga, Samoa and American Samoa.

There have been no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami was triggered.

6 Large Quakes Strike Philippines

Six earthquakes struck the Moro Gulf of Mindanao island in the southern Philippines today, followed by one in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The latest temblor, with a magnitude of 5.4, struck 50 kilometers south-southeast of Sumatra’s Padangsidempuan city at 9:11 a.m. local time, the agency said on its website. One dead, dozens injured in southern Iran quake

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook southern Iran early Wednesday, killing one person, injuring dozens and damaging houses in four villages near the town of Lamerd, media reports said.

State television’s website reported that “an 80-year-old woman, who was injured in the earthquake, died of internal bleeding after she was taken to hospital in Lamerd.”

The islands are a seismically active zone where the earth’s crust is being subducted.

The United States Geological Survey has announced that an earthquake struck Alaska’s Aleutian Islands The earthquake took place at a depth of 10 km (just over six miles) in the Fox Islands part of the Aleutian chain.

4.3 Earthquake jolts northwest Haiti

A magnitude-4.3 earthquake today jolted northwest Haiti, reported the U.S. Geological Survey. According to the report the light tremor shook the sea-floor 15 miles west of the coastal city of Gonaives in the early morning. The quake did not damage anything. Talking to reporters, Gonaives residents said that they felt the quake but no one was injured and buildings were not affected.

It may be recalled that a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake had hit Haiti six months ago, killing more than 230,000 people and leaving hundreds and thousands homeless. Read More / Watch Video »

200,000 killed in Haiti quake, says premier

More than 200,000 people were killed in the January 12 earthquake that hit Haiti, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said yesterday.

Mr Bellerive said 300,000 people were injured in the disaster, including 4,000 amputees. Previous estimates from the Haitian government had put the toll between 150,000 and 200,000 dead.

HAITI’S police chief says bandits are preying on vulnerable earthquake survivors, even raping women, in makeshift camps set up in the capital after the disaster.

“With the blackout that’s befallen the Haitian capital, bandits are taking advantage to harass and rape women and young girls under the tents,” national police chief Mario Andresol said.

“We have more than 7000 detainees in the streets who escaped from the National Penitentiary the evening of the earthquake.

Two earthquakes have been recorded in Co Donegal within the past 36 hours.

They come less than three weeks after an earthquake measuring 1.6 was recorded in the northeast of the county.

Magnitude 6.1 aftershock strikes Haiti

A strong aftershock struck Haiti on Wednesday, sending people camping out in the capital’s streets after last week’s earthquake running away from crumbled buildings in panic.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it had a magnitude of 6.1 and was centred 26 miles (42 km) west-northwest of Jacmel.

A swarm of earthquakes that began on Sunday at Yellowstone National Park continued this morning and the magnitude of the tremors is increasing.

Troops arrive to help Haiti

US Black Hawk helicopters swooped down on Haiti’s wrecked presidential palace to deploy troops and supplies, as a huge relief operation to help earthquake survivors gained momentum.

The airborne troops in combat gear moved to secure Port-au-Prince’s nearby General Hospital, where staff have been overwhelmed by huge numbers of seriously injured patients.
