Fearing that climate change could wipe out their entire Pacific archipelago, the leaders of Kiribati are considering an unusual backup plan: moving the populace to Fiji.

Kiribati President Anote Tong told The Associated Press on Friday that his Cabinet this week endorsed a plan to buy nearly 6,000 acres on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu.

Posted by redsky On October - 13 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

The UN’s talks on climate change are daft and crippled by finger-pointing and the need for consensus, the president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, was quoted on Thursday by Le Monde as saying.

Nasheed also said emerging economies were as much to blame for global warming as rich nations.

Europe’s Oceans Changing Rapidly

Posted by redsky On September - 13 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Europe’s seas are changing at an unprecedented rate as ice sheets melt, temperatures rise and marine life migrates due to climate change, a report by the Climate Change and European Marine Ecosystem Research (CLAMER) project warned.

Scientists examined a mass of EU-funded research on the impacts of climate change on Europe’s marine environment and identified the gaps and priorities for future work.

Rising Seas Threaten Aussie Cities

Posted by redsky On May - 24 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Australia’s main cities face floods and king tides from rising sea levels that could make once-in-a-century disasters an annual crisis by 2100, a report says.

The first report of the federal Government’s new Climate Change Commission also gives a warning of vast social and psychological problems as people try to cope with more frequent disasters of the scale of Victoria’s Black Saturday bushfires and the Queensland floods.

Oceans Set To Rise By 1.6 Metres

Posted by redsky On May - 3 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Warming in the Arctic occurring at twice the global average is on track to lift sea levels by up to 1.6 metres (5.3 feet) by 2100, a far steeper jump than predicted a few years ago, a consortium of scientists reported Tuesday.

Melting ice and snow has accounted for 40 percent of recent increases in ocean levels and are likely to play an even larger role in future, according to the Oslo-based Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Project (AMAP).

Melting Arctic Boosts Sea Levels

Posted by redsky On April - 21 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Between 2004 and 2009, the 30,000 snow-and-ice covered islands in the Canadian Archipelago shed 363 cubic kilometres (87 cubic miles) of water, equivalent to three-quarters of contents of Lake Erie, the study found.

During the first half of this six-year period, the average loss was 29 cubic kilometres (seven cubic miles) per year. But during the second three-year period, the average jumped to 92 cubic kilometres (22 cubic miles) annually.

Antarctic Ice Forms From Bottom

Posted by redsky On March - 3 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Some of Antarctica’s ice sheet is formed by water re-freezing from below not just by snow falling on top as was traditionally thought, findings showed on Thursday that will help scientists project effects of climate change.

Experts are seeking to understand the frozen continent since even a small thaw could swamp low-lying coastal areas and cities. Antarctica contains enough ice to raise world sea levels by about 57 meters (187 ft) if it ever all melted.

Warming to Devastate Glaciers

Posted by redsky On January - 10 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Global warming may wipe out three-quarters of Europe’s alpine glaciers by 2100 and hike sea levels by four metres by 3000 through melting the West Antarctic icesheet, two studies published at the weekend said.

The research places the spotlight on two of the least understood aspects of climate change: how, when and where warming will affect glaciers on which many millions depend for their water and the problems faced by generations in the far distant future.
