South Africa puts power security above clean energy

Posted by redsky On September - 15 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

South Africa, which relies on coal for 90 percent of its electricity, will need to first focus on ensuring sufficient power supply before moving full-scale to fight climate change, a minister said on Tuesday.

South Africa, the continent’s largest economy and the world’s 12th largest carbon emitter, has been struggling to meet its fast-rising power demand and has chosen to invest in new coal-fired power plants to fill the power supply gap.

The country plans to diversify its energy sources to include wind, solar and hydro, and has provided incentives for investors to put their money into renewable power, but it may have to rely on coal-fired energy for a while to come. Read More / Watch Video »

South Africa, a major polluter due to its dependence on coal-fired electricity, will not agree to any emission-cutting targets if doing so hurts the country’s economy, a cabinet spokesman said on Thursday.

International talks resume in December in Copenhagen where countries will try to thrash out a new international climate change regime beyond 2012 amid increased discord over the role developing countries can play in reducing harmful emissions.

South Africa, echoing a view widely held by developing countries, including China and India, said emission-cutting targets would hit its economy during a global economic downturn. Read More / Watch Video »

African nations will walk out of climate change talks in Copenhagen if their demands, including hefty compensations from the West, are not met, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said Thursday.

One of the key demands that the world’s poorest continent is making is billions of dollars in compensation to help it cope with the effects of climate change.

However a panel representing the continent at the talks is yet to come up with a figure. Read More / Watch Video »

Pacific island state of Tuvalu set a goal Sunday of a 100 percent shift to renewable energy by 2020, hoping to set an example to industrialized nations to cut greenhouse gases it blames for rising sea levels.

Tuvalu, a string of coral atolls whose highest point is 4.5 meters (15 ft) above sea level, estimates it would cost just over $20 million to generate all electricity for its 12,000 people from solar and wind power and end dependence on diesel.
