Millions of people around Japan have marked the first anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami which devastated dozens of communities and left 19,000 people dead.

Across the country, trains stopped, shoppers stood still and people fell silent at 2:46pm, marking the exact moment the earthquake struck, setting off a catastrophic chain of events.

Scientists Survey Japan Quake Zone

Scientists on Thursday launched a mission to the seabed off Japan where a massive quake triggered last year’s devastating tsunami, to get their first proper look at the buckled ocean floor.

Researchers from Germany and Japan are sending high-tech vehicles to probe the seabed up to 7,000 metres (23,000 feet) below the surface where the massive seismic shock hit last March.

BANGKOK — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton played with a toddler and asked a little girl if she misses school during a quick visit to an evacuation center for Thai flood victims Thursday, a day after announcing a $10 million aid package.

Clinton exchanged the traditional Thai greeting known as “wai” – bowing deeply while pressing the palms together near the face – with some of the more than 1,400 evacuees living in gymnasiums inside the Ratchamangala National Stadium complex.

iPhone Geiger Counter For Japanese

A Japanese company Tuesday unveiled a cheap Geiger counter for the iPhone to enable people worried about the March Fukushima nuclear accident to check their environment for radiation.

The probe, 14 centimetres long by five wide (six inches by two), connects to the iPhone and the screen displays radiation readings in combination with a special app such as the Geiger Bot.

Greenpeace has lashed out at allegations made by a legislator that one of its top British activists managed to skirt an entry ban into Indonesia by using a false passport.

Nur Hidayati, Greenpeace’s country representative for Indonesia, said on Tuesday that Andy Tait entered the country using a valid passport and that attempts to deport him last Saturday failed because the purported entry ban was riddled with errors.

Barbie Goes From Pink To Green

US toy giant Mattel, maker of the world-famous Barbie doll, has decided to use more environmentally friendly materials in its packaging after months of criticism from Greenpeace.

The California-based company said Wednesday it hopes to source 70 percent of its paper packaging from recycled material or sustainable fiber by the end of the year, with the goal rising to 85 percent by the end of 2015.
