Buckingham Palace has released the full details of the Queen’s tour of Australia this month, which will include meetings with Queensland flood victims and a visit to the Floriade Flower Festival.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrive in Canberra on October 19 for a busy 10-day tour of the country.

Tsunami Alert System For WA

In the next few months, Australian scientists will activate a world-first tsunami warning system in the remote East Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Geoscience Australia says the device will be able to track earthquakes off Indonesia in real time, which will make accurate tsunami predictions possible.

Six Greenpeace activists have been arrested after climbing a crane at an inner Sydney construction site the group says is using illegal timber.

The activists scaled the crane at the Central Park development on Broadway about 7:00am, unfurling a banner saying “Stop illegal timber”.

6.3 Quake Hits Papua New Guinea

The Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea was rattled by a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake on Monday, but seismologists said the tremor was unlikely to have caused major damage in the remote area.

Geoscience Australia measured the quake at magnitude 6.3 and said it occurred at a depth of 39 kilometres in the New Ireland region, which is known for earthquake and volcanic activity.

The coastline of north Queensland is usually picture perfect in winter, but there is a problem in the shallows.
Over the past few months sick, lethargic and sometimes dead sea turtles have been washing up onto the region’s beaches.

Experts are trying to find out what is killing off the animals, but they suspect years of extreme weather may be playing a role and events like Cyclone Yasi have destroyed large tracts of essential seagrass.

Queensland scientists are studying bacteria from crocodiles and cows to understand what is causing it to turn deadly in groper fish in the state’s north.

Since 2007, almost 100 of the protected species have washed up dead on beaches from Port Douglas to Yeppoon.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit off the Solomon Islands this morning, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 8:05am (local time) at a depth of 54 kilometres about 260 kilometres east of the capital Honiara, according to the US Geological Survey.

Forests Absorb A Third Of CO2

Forests play a larger role in Earth’s climate system than previously suspected for both the risks from deforestation and the potential gains from regrowth, a benchmark study released Thursday has shown.

The study, published in Science, provides the most accurate measure so far of the amount of greenhouse gases absorbed from the atmosphere by tropical, temperate and boreal forests, researchers said.

Rapidly warming ocean temperatures in some parts of the world could be pushing some fish species to the limit, stunting their growth, increasing stress and raising the risk of death, a study shows.

An Australian study, published on Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change, focused on the long-lived fish species called the banded morwong in the Tasman Sea, between Australia and New Zealand.

New Zealand has sent a naval vessel to ensure a high-seas dispute between Greenpeace activists and a Brazilian-owned vessel exploring for oil does not escalate, police confirmed Tuesday.

In recent days, swimmers from a Greenpeace flotilla have entered the water in Raukumara Basin, off New Zealand’s East Cape, forcing a vessel from the Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras off course and disrupting its work.
