Flash Floods Hit italian Riviera

At least nine people have been killed and five others are missing after flash floods hit the Italian Riviera turning roads into rivers and washing cars out to sea.

The huge downpour also triggered off landslides along some of Italy’s most picturesque coastline along the Cinque Terre which is a popular destination for British holidaymakers.

Turkish Inmates Revolt After Quake

Prisoners have set fire to a jail in Turkey’s earthquake-hit city of Van and gunshots have been heard as inmates fought their guards following a big aftershock.

A soldier said prisoners had attacked the guards with scissors and knives, two days after 200 people are reported to have escaped in the chaos after Sunday’s quake.

Quake Woman Found After 66 Hours

Emergency workers have rescued a 27-year-old woman alive from a collapsed building, three days after an earthquake killed more than 400 people in eastern Turkey.

Gozde Bahar, an English teacher, was pulled out alive Wednesday in the town of Ercis, the hardest hit by the quake, 66 hours after it happened.

Ciaran Jones, 25, had been directing traffic to safety at Ballysmutton Bridge near Blessington in County Wicklow when he was swept away.

Etna Eruption Closes Airport

Lava and ash spewing out of a crater of the giant Etna volcano in southern Italy forced the closure of nearby Catania airport, ANSA news agency said late Sunday.

With a high risk of volcanic ash being blown onto the runways, the airport was closed for safety reasons and flights redirected to nearby Palermo.

..An earthquake has hit eastern Turkey killing at least 75 people with hundreds more feared dead and causing the collapse of at least 45 buildings.

The 7.2 magnitude quake shook the town of Ercis, in the mountainous eastern province of Van, close to the Iranian border.

An elderly British couple have been swept to their deaths in a flash flood while holidaying in Spain.

The pair, understood to be in their 70s, were hit by a wall of water as they sat outside a market-place cafe in the sleepy town of Finestrat on the Costa Blanca.

ROME — A torrential rainstorm battered Rome during the morning rush hour Thursday, causing flash floods that killed one man, felled trees and blocked thousands of commuters from reaching their workplaces.

Firemen reported finding the body of a man who drowned in his basement apartment. Police rescued dozens of others from low-lying buildings.

A sudden onset of harsh winter conditions caused transport chaos in Bulgaria on Tuesday, with one man freezing to death, eight people missing in mountains, 600 villages without power and schools closed.

A 73-year-old man chopping wood in southeastern Bulgaria died on the way to hospital after being snowbound overnight along with 15 other Roma, including eight children, authorities said.

Energy Efficiency Act Becomes Law

LONDON (Reuters) – An energy act came into law on Wednesday which aims to boost energy efficiency in residential homes, the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said.

More than half of homes have insufficient insulation, and around 50 percent more energy is used to heat and power homes than is used to power industry, according to DECC.

Ash Rises From Russian Volcano

An explosive eruption is taking place at Russia’s Shiveluch volcano (sometimes called Sheveluch or Sopka Shiveluch), located in the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting no fly zones to be imposed in the region.

Ash plumes have risen to 34,500 ft (10.5 km) while seismic activity is ongoing. The official Itar-Tass news agency reported on Monday that the highest-level warning has been issued for aviation.

Hungary Faces New Sludge Threat

An Austrian government expert criticised on Thursday a toxic red mud reservoir bordering the Danube in northern Hungary as a “high risk site,” questioning the stability of the dyke.

The bottom of the reservoir in Almasfuzito was water-permeable, allowing hazardous substances to flow into the Danube, Karl Lorber, a member of the Austrian government’s Environmental Advisory Board, told a press conference organised by environmental pressure group Greenpeace.

An earthquake measuring a 4.1 magnitude on the Richter scale was registered the northern Bulgarian Black Sea town of Shabla late last night.

The quake was felt strongly in Shabla and lightly in municipalities of the Dobrich region and several communities in the Varna region.

The United Nations urged the world’s cities on Monday to protect their trees, saying they can ease fallout from natural disasters and can help a metropolis mitigate the effects of climate change.

“Good practices in urban and peri-urban forestry can contribute to building a resilient city in terms of mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change,” a senior official at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said in a statement.
