34 Meter Tsunami Could Hit Japan

TOKYO (AP)—Much of Japan’s Pacific coast could be inundated by a tsunami more than 34 meters (112 feet) high if a powerful earthquake hits offshore, according to revised estimates by a government panel.

The panel of experts says any tsunami unleashed by a magnitude-9.0 earthquake in the Nankai trough, which runs east of Japan’s main island of Honshu to the southern island of Kyushu, could top 34 m at its highest.

A fishing boat lost during the Japanese tsunami disaster a year ago has turned up off Canada’s west coast.

The 65-metre vessel was first spotted on Tuesday last week by a Canadian Forces aircraft on a routine surveillance patrol, but an aerial inspection has since suggested there was no-one on board.

A minor tsunami has hit Japan’s north-eastern coastline, NHK television reported, after a strong earthquake rocked the region nearly a year on from Japan’s worst post-war natural disaster.

The 10-centimetre wave and 6.8 magnitude quake, which struck some 210 kilometres off the northern island of Hokkaido, prompted local authorities to issue an evacuation warning for coastal residents.

Scientists Survey Japan Quake Zone

Scientists on Thursday launched a mission to the seabed off Japan where a massive quake triggered last year’s devastating tsunami, to get their first proper look at the buckled ocean floor.

Researchers from Germany and Japan are sending high-tech vehicles to probe the seabed up to 7,000 metres (23,000 feet) below the surface where the massive seismic shock hit last March.

A 24-year-old woman has died of bird flu on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, the fifth human death from the virus this year, a health ministry official said Wednesday.

“She tested positive for the H5N1 virus by the health ministry’s laboratory. It’s the fifth death here this year,” the ministry’s head of animal-borne infectious diseases, Rita Kusriastuti, told AFP.

BEIJING (Reuters) – Lead emission from factories and the natural environment in China’s manufacturing heart of Guangdong has poisoned 160 children, Xinhua said on Sunday in the country’s latest case of unfettered industrial toxins.

Children from Dongtang town in Renhua country were found to have “elevated” levels of lead in their blood after inhaling lead-contaminated air and eating food tainted with lead, Xinhua said.

An avalanche has buried a village in north-eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 37 people and leaving dozens more trapped under the snow, officials said.

The avalanche slammed into the village in the Shekay district of mountainous Badakhshan province late on Monday after days of heavy snowfall were followed by a rise in temperature, provincial spokesman Abdul Rauf Rasekh said.

The death toll from a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the central Philippines just before noon on Monday has risen to 43 as landslides struck a mountainous area.

At least 29 were killed by landslides while 10 others were crushed by collapsing buildings in the mountainous town of of Guihulngan on Negros island, said regional military official colonel Francisco Patrimonio.
