Japan Marks Tsunami Anniversary

Millions of people around Japan have marked the first anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami which devastated dozens of communities and left 19,000 people dead.

Across the country, trains stopped, shoppers stood still and people fell silent at 2:46pm, marking the exact moment the earthquake struck, setting off a catastrophic chain of events.

Japan Studies Near Fukushima Plant

Japanese scientists are studying how radiation has affected plants and animals living near the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, according to an official.

Researchers are examining field mice, red pine trees, a certain type of shellfish and other wild flora and fauna in and around the 20 kilometre (12 mile) no-go zone surrounding the plant, an Environment Ministry official said on Monday.

Emissions Rise After Atomic Crisis

Japanese manufacturer’s greenhouse gas emissions are rising after the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster, hurting the country’s carbon reduction goals, a report said Sunday.

The trend will deal a blow to Japan’s target of reducing emissions by six percent from 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012 under the Kyoto Protocol, the Nikkei business daily reported.

..TOKYO (Reuters) – Decommissioning Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant will take three or four decades, Japan’s government said on Wednesday as it unveiled plans for the next phase of a huge and costly cleanup of the tsunami-wrecked complex.

The plant, 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was destroyed on March 11 by a huge earthquake and a towering tsunami which knocked out its cooling systems, triggering meltdowns, radiation leaks and mass evacuations.

Japan says it has finally brought leaking reactors at Fukushima under control in a move authorities say is a vital step on the long road to recovery, nine months after its nuclear crisis began.

Prime minister Yoshihiko Noda told a meeting of his nuclear taskforce that the crippled reactors “have reached a state of cold shutdown to the point where the accident is now under control”.

The operator of a nuclear power plant in western Japan has shut down one of its reactors because of leaking radioactive water.

The shutdown at the Mihama nuclear plant means just eight of the country’s 54 reactors are online, with power shortages expected in parts of Japan this winter.

The operator of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant says at least 45 tonnes of highly radioactive water has leaked from the facility, possibly into the Pacific Ocean.

A statement by the operator TEPCO said workers noticed a leak in a purification device, with radioactive water escaping through a crack in a catchment wall.

Fukushima Rice Is Radioactive

Tests have found unsafe levels of radioactive contamination in recently harvested rice from Japan’s Fukushima region.It is the first time radiation levels this high have been found in rice since the nuclear disaster in March.

The tests were carried out on rice harvested from a field 50 kilometres from the nuclear plant.

iPhone Geiger Counter For Japanese

A Japanese company Tuesday unveiled a cheap Geiger counter for the iPhone to enable people worried about the March Fukushima nuclear accident to check their environment for radiation.

The probe, 14 centimetres long by five wide (six inches by two), connects to the iPhone and the screen displays radiation readings in combination with a special app such as the Geiger Bot.
