Asia has welcomed the world’s first symbolic seven billionth baby, but celebrations were tempered by worries over the strain that humanity’s population explosion is putting on a fragile planet.

The United Nations said by its best estimates the seven billionth baby would be born on October 31, and countries around the world have planned events surrounding the demographic milestone.

Bulldozers have replaced sniffer dogs as search efforts wound down in quake-hit eastern Turkey and the death toll rose to over 600.

With temperatures dipping to below freezing the biggest problem now facing survivors in Van province was a lack of tents and heaters, media reports said.

Snow blanketed quake-hit eastern Turkey Thursday, while emergency crews found a teenager alive in the rubble more than 100 hours after the disaster even as the death toll climbed to 550.

Aydin Palak, 18, was pulled out of the wreckage in town of Ercis, which took the full brunt of the quake, media reports said.

A teenager has been pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed building more than 100 hours after an earthquake struck eastern Turkey.

The 18-year-old named Imdat was found by rescuers searching for survivors in the town of Ercis, which took the full brunt of the 7.2 magnitude quake.

A third of humanity, mostly in Africa and South Asia, face the biggest risks from climate change but rich nations in northern Europe will be least exposed, according to a report released Wednesday.

Bangladesh, India and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are among 30 countries with “extreme” exposure to climate shift, according to a ranking of 193 nations by Maplecroft, a British firm specialising in risk analysis.

At least nine people have been killed and five others are missing after flash floods hit the Italian Riviera turning roads into rivers and washing cars out to sea.

The huge downpour also triggered off landslides along some of Italy’s most picturesque coastline along the Cinque Terre which is a popular destination for British holidaymakers.

Prisoners have set fire to a jail in Turkey’s earthquake-hit city of Van and gunshots have been heard as inmates fought their guards following a big aftershock.

A soldier said prisoners had attacked the guards with scissors and knives, two days after 200 people are reported to have escaped in the chaos after Sunday’s quake.

Emergency workers have rescued a 27-year-old woman alive from a collapsed building, three days after an earthquake killed more than 400 people in eastern Turkey.

Gozde Bahar, an English teacher, was pulled out alive Wednesday in the town of Ercis, the hardest hit by the quake, 66 hours after it happened.

Lava and ash spewing out of a crater of the giant Etna volcano in southern Italy forced the closure of nearby Catania airport, ANSA news agency said late Sunday.

With a high risk of volcanic ash being blown onto the runways, the airport was closed for safety reasons and flights redirected to nearby Palermo.

ROME — A torrential rainstorm battered Rome during the morning rush hour Thursday, causing flash floods that killed one man, felled trees and blocked thousands of commuters from reaching their workplaces.

Firemen reported finding the body of a man who drowned in his basement apartment. Police rescued dozens of others from low-lying buildings.

A sudden onset of harsh winter conditions caused transport chaos in Bulgaria on Tuesday, with one man freezing to death, eight people missing in mountains, 600 villages without power and schools closed.

A 73-year-old man chopping wood in southeastern Bulgaria died on the way to hospital after being snowbound overnight along with 15 other Roma, including eight children, authorities said.
