Japan Ships Radioactive Containers

BRUSSELS, May 4 (Reuters) – Belgium’s radiation safety regulator has discovered radiation levels surpassing European Union limits on a shipping container from Japan, the agency said on Wednesday.

The agency is decontaminating the container after it found radiation from Cesium-137 being emitted at a level of 0.5 microsieverts per hour in two rust spots.

Radiation Spike In Sea Off Japan

TOKYO (AFP) – Levels of radioactive substances have jumped in the Pacific seabed off Japan near the nuclear power plant crippled by a massive tsunami in March, according to the plant operator.

Seabed samples collected some 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant contained 1,400 becquerels of radioactive caesium-137 per kilogramme, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said.

DNA To Identify Tsunami Victims

TOKYO (AFP) – Japanese police are to set up a DNA database to help identify the bodies of those killed in the March earthquake and tsunami, reports said Tuesday.

Police in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures will collect DNA samples from the belongings of people still listed as missing and from their relatives, national broadcaster NHK said.

TOKYO (AFP) – Japanese retail sales recorded their steepest drop in 13 years in March, the government said Wednesday as last month’s massive earthquake and tsunami dampened consumer sentiment.

Retail store sales in March tumbled 8.5 percent from a year earlier, reversing a 0.1 percent gain in February, the ministry of economy, trade and industry said.

Hundreds of angry Japanese farmers protested Tuesday outside the Tokyo head office of nuclear plant operator TEPCO, taking with them vegetables, milk and and even two cows affected by the atomic crisis.

Some 350 people, mainly farmers from the region around the radiation-leaking Fukushima Daiichi power plant, flocked to the heavily-guarded headquarters of embattled utility Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) in the capital.

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan said on Thursday it would ban anyone entering a 20-km (12-mile) evacuation zone around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant north of Tokyo, weeks after the tsunami-wrecked facility began leaking radiation.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 hit eastern Japan on Thursday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.

TOKYO (AFP) – A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit eastern Japan late Thursday, rattling buildings in Tokyo but appearing to cause no damage and there was no tsunami warning.

The tremor struck at a depth of 70 kilometres (43 miles), off Chiba prefecture, at 10:37 pm (1337 GMT), the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Rainbow Warrior Heads For Japan

TOKYO (AFP) – Greenpeace said Thursday it is sending its Rainbow Warrior flagship to Japan to test seawater and marine life near the tsunami-hit Fukushima nuclear plant which is leaking radiation.

The ship has left Taiwan and is set to start testing as early as next Wednesday, said the environmental activist group, which has also been monitoring aerial and soil radiation and food produce near the atomic plant.

Italy Halts Nuclear Programme

Italy’s Senate on Wednesday approved a proposal to halt plans to return to nuclear power following the disaster in Japan, as a top minister said Rome would seek guidance from the European Union on the way forward.

The government’s proposal to block plans to build nuclear power stations was approved over a “No” vote from the opposition Democratic and Italy of Values parties and will now go to the Chamber of Deputies for final approval.

CHICAGO (AFP) – Japanese automaker Toyota on Tuesday extended production cuts at its North American plants in the wake of supply shortages following the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The announcement came a day after Toyota resumed production at all of its Japanese plants, though at a sharply reduced volume.

TOKYO (AFP) – Japanese police on Thursday found the bodies of 10 tsunami victims in the first search of a 10-kilometre (six-mile) zone around an atomic plant, as emergency crews battled to contain a nuclear crisis.

Hundreds of police wearing white protective suits and face masks scoured rubble-strewn neighbourhoods near the plant for victims of the giant wave that smashed into Japan’s northeast coast more than a month ago.

SENDAI, Japan (AFP) – Commercial aircraft landed in Sendai on Wednesday for the first time since the city’s busy airport was crippled by the powerful tsunami that smashed into Japan last month.

TOKYO — A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 rocked Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures in northeastern and eastern Japan early Tuesday afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The latest temblor came after an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 jolted Chiba Prefecture, just east of Tokyo, and its vicinity, while a magnitude 5.6 quake rocked Nagano Prefecture in central Japan and its surrounding areas, both Tuesday morning.

Japan Crisis Upgrade Woefully Late

Environmental campaign group Greenpeace on Tuesday said Japan’s upgrading of its Fukushima nuclear disaster to the top level of seven on an international scale was “woefully late”.

Japan upped its nuclear emergency to a “major accident” and a maximum level on a UN global scale of atomic crises, the first time the highest ranking has been invoked since the Ukraine’s 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
