Mass Burial for Mt. Merapi Victims

Dozens of victims of Indonesia’s erupting Mount Merapi who were killed by heat clouds are to be buried in a mass grave in Yogyakarta an official said.

Indonesia’s most active volcano, also known as the Mountain of Fire, has been erupting since late last month and has so far killed a total of 120 people, including 77 on Friday.

A Qantas spokeswoman has confirmed QF6 from Singapore to Sydney experienced a problem shortly after take-off at 9:17pm (local time).

Indonesian authorities say the Merapi volcano had nothing to do with Thursday’s Qantas A380 engine emergency. But ash clouds from Indonesia and elsewhere have been a hazard to aviation before.

One of the four engines on a Qantas A380 – the largest passenger jet in the sky – caught fire and had to be shut down shortly after takeoff from Singapore on a scheduled flight to Sydney, leading Qantas to ground its fleet of A380s until it gets to the bottom of what happened.

Up to 98 people are feared dead after Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano sent searing clouds of ash down its slopes, setting several village houses ablaze.

Hospital workers said a three-year-old girl was among 11 people killed and more than 50 others were injured when the ash hit Bronggang, a village nine miles (15km) from the volcano’s crater.

Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano erupted with renewed ferocity on Friday, killing another 54 people and blanketing the surrounding area with ash.

Ten days of eruptions have now killed nearly 100 people and forced the evacuation of more than 75,000.

The Qantas A380 aircraft, carrying 433 passengers and 26 crew, experienced problems soon after taking off from Singapore.

Mount Merapi. In its biggest eruption since Tuesday evening, ejected volcanic ash and other material over a 2 kilometers radius early on Thursday morning.

Surono, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), said the ash was being blown in a westerly direction toward Magelang in Central Java.

Indonesia’s deadly volcano erupted Wednesday with its biggest blast yet, shooting searing ash miles into the sky and forcing the hasty evacuations of panicked villagers and emergency shelters near the base.

Soldiers loaded men, women and crying children into trucks as rocks and debris hurled in the air and down the mountain’s slopes. No new casualties were reported immediately after the booming explosion that lasted more than an hour.

Jakarta. Indonesia’s Mount Merapi in central Java spewed more hot clouds of ash today, as volcanologist said such activity may last for about two months.

Today’s action didn’t qualify as an eruption, Subandriyo, an official at the country’s Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center, said.

Malaysia’s AirAsia and Singapore’s SilkAir airlines have cancelled flights to two Indonesian destinations because of volcanic ash from Mount Merapi that began erupting a week ago.

An official of budget airline AirAsia says four of its flights between Kuala Lumpur and the cities of Solo and Yogyakarta were scrapped on Tuesday. The two cities are about 19 miles (30 kilometres) from the crater.

Jakarta. Former “Baywatch” star Pamela Anderson has donated $25,000 from a Playboy cover shoot to a charity that helps disaster victims in Indonesia, only to find her pledge of help snubbed by members of the hard-line Islamic Defenders Front.

“I’ve just shot another Playboy cover that will debut in January for Hugh Hefner, at his request — I adore him. Playboy and I decided to do this, so I could donate earnings from the shoot to Waves for Water,” Anderson said on her Web site.

Evacuation as Merapi Erupts Again

Yogyakarta. The refugees at the Glagahardjo shelter in Sleman, Yogyakarta, were evacuated after Mount Merapi erupted again on Monday morning.

There was some difficulty in the evacuation, however, because most of the women initially refused to leave. They were waiting for their husbands to return from feeding the cattle left at their homes located near the volcano’s crater.

US Pledges 2 Million for Indonesia

Ambassador Scot Marciel has announced that the U.S. Government Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) will provide USD 2 million in humanitarian assistance in response to the eruption of Mount Merapi and tsunami in the Mentawai Islands.

The Ambassador made this announcement at the October 29 speech to students at the University of Indonesia. The aid will be used to assist more than 40,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) near Mount Merapi and the Mentawai Islands tsunami victims.
