China Miners Pulled to Safety

Twenty-nine miners trapped in a flooded mine in China have been found alive and brought to safety.

Being trapped in a Chinese mine is usually a death sentence, but in the south-western Chinese province of Sichuan villagers applauded at the Batian coal mine as rescuers brought the miners to safety.

According to official statistics, about 2,630 miners were killed in China last year.

The miners had been trapped since Sunday morning.

After the initial accident the deputy mine manager led a team of seven rescuers to help their trapped colleagues but were then trapped themselves.

The rescue team and the original group of miners were all found alive and are receiving emergency medical treatment.

Images of smiling and cheering rescuers and villagers were broadcast live on Chinese television.
