RESIDENTS from Darwin to Katherine were shaken from their sleep just after 6.30am by an strong earthquake in the Banda Sea.
The NT News reports the magnitude six earthquake was located 700km north of Darwin at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago.
People reported feeling the earth shake for about four to five seconds. Geoscience Australia seismologist David Jepsen said the Top End was in a “sweet spot” for feeling earthquakes originating hundreds of kilometres away.
He said scientists still did not know exactly why that was.
“The earth is just made up of areas where energy propagates from one area to another more efficiently than other areas.”
