Earthquake Jolts Pakistan

The northern parts of Pakistan, including the federal capital and Peshawar, were today rocked by an earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale, officials said.

The quake, which occurred at 5.51 am, was felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Peshawar, Swat and Mardan.

It also rocked parts of the country’s tribal belt bordering Afghanistan. The tremblor had its epicentre 119 km northwest of Peshawar.

Earlier, at 1.03 am, areas in Chitral and Swat district were rocked by another quake measuring 4 on the Richter scale.

Its epicentre was 74 km northeast of Chitral. People rushed out of their houses in panic though there were no reports of casualties or damage to property.
