SLEMAN (Indonesia) – INDONESIA’S Mount Merapi volcano erupted again on Thursday, blasting vast ash clouds into the sky and unleashing jets of searing gas, two days after an initial eruption killed at least 34 people.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. More than 40,000 people had fled or been evacuated from Merapi’s slopes ahead of the previous eruption, but many had started to return after the volcano appeared to become calmer on Wednesday.

Indonesia is also dealing with the aftermath of a tsunami that killed at least 343 people in remote western islands on Monday. — REUTERS
