Severe Storms Hit US Midwest

A band of severe thunderstorms sweeping across the US midwest has left tens of thousands without power and caused widespread damage.

The massive storm front stretches over 1,000 kilometres.

More than 60,000 homes have lost power in Indiana where sirens have sounded and buildings have been ripped apart by tornadoes.

Another 80,000 households have lost power in and around Chicago, after Illinois was lashed by high winds, hail and heavy rains.

Forecasters say it is the most powerful storm system to hit the region in decades.

The storms have caused the cancellation or delay of hundreds of flights at O’Hare airport, America’s second busiest airport, as well as disruption to shipping traffic on the Great Lakes.

The storm front is now moving towards Canada. Tornado watches have already been issued in Ontario.
