A small earthquake occurred in Lancashire over the weekend, seismologists have confirmed.
The British Geological Survey (BGS), which records all earthquakes across the UK, said the epicentre was five miles (8km) south-east of Blackburn.
The quake, which happened just after 14:30 GMT on Saturday, had a magnitude of 2.2.
A BGS spokesman described it as a “typical British earthquake” which no-one had reported.
“In this country, we have between 20 and 30 earthquakes of this magnitude per year,” he said.
The spokesman added that only a tenth of UK tremors were actually felt by people.
According to the BGS, most earthquakes in the UK occur on the western side of the Britain.
