Tornado Damages Half Of Iowa Town

MAPLETON, Iowa — A small Iowa town remains barricaded after a tornado destroyed much of it Saturday evening, and no one is being allowed back into the city.

Monona County Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Krohn told the Sioux City Journal as much as 60 percent of the town of Mapleton may have been damaged or destroyed.

So far, only minor injuries have been reported in the town with about 1,200 people.

The Iowa National Guard is on the scene, and the Journal reports residents may be allowed back Sunday morning.

City Clerk Karla Uhl tells the Des Moines Register that shelters were set up for people to spend the night. She says the town has no power and the damage includes several homes destroyed and damage to a school, light plant and sub-station.
