Tropical Storm Etau Devastates Japan

Gallery: An emergency has unfolded in parts of Japan as Tropical Storm Etau dumped more than a foot of rain on residential areas, triggering flooding and mudslides that pushed tens of thousands from their homes.

One person has died and at least 22 people were injured in the massive flooding event, three of which were serious injuries. More than 900 homes were flooded, and nearly 1 million people were advised to evacuate.

North of Tokyo, more than 20 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour span in Tochigi Prefecture, forcing rare emergency warnings to be issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency. In the city of Joso, a levee was breached early Thursday afternoon, and local residents had to be rescued from their rooftops.
