The Indo-Australian plate heats up and its water content turns to superheated steam under enormous pressure. JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) – The U.S. Geological Survey says a 6.8-magnitude, undersea earthquake has shaken eastern Indonesia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says no destructive tsunami was generated.
The USGS says the temblor struck in the Banda Sea on Friday and had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8. It struck at a depth of depth 375 miles (600 kilometers) far off the coast of Sulawesi island.

Sumatra Shaken By Magnitude-5 Earthquake

JAKARTA, Aug 26 (Bernama) — An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale jolted Aceh Province, northern Sumatra, in the wee hours of Wednesday, Antara news agency reported.

The temblor’s epicenter was located at 5.28 degrees northern latitude and 94.77 degrees eastern longitude, around 68 km southwest of Banda Aceh.

The earthquake located at a depth of 24 km below sea level did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, according to information from the meteorological, climatology and geophysics office. Read More / Watch Video »
