Haiti Camps: Girls Rampantly Raped

One year after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, women and girls staying in the country’s refugee camps live without adequate food, water, shelter and medical care. And when the darkness falls, the rapists come.

According to a report from Amnesty International, precarious living conditions and a lack of security in and around the camps have left thousands of women and girls as young as two vulnerable to sexual predators.

Haiti Cholera Deaths Exceed 2,350

Port-au-Prince — A total of 2,350 people have died and 104,614 have been sickened so far in the cholera epidemic besieging Haiti since mid-October, authorities said yesterday.

According to figures supplied by the Public Health and Population Ministry, in the last three days 130 people have died from cholera
around the country.

AFP – The death toll from Haiti’s cholera epidemic rose to 1,603 on Thursday, up from 1,415 just two days previously, according to the health ministry.

The outbreak has infected 69,776 people since it was first detected in mid-October, of whom 29,871 have been hospitalized, it said.

Port-Au-Prince, Haiti — The death toll has risen to at least 1,344 in the cholera outbreak in Haiti that has sickened nearly 57,000 people, the Haitian government said Monday.

The announcement came as international health officials predicted that the scale of Haiti’s cholera epidemic will exceed initial estimates of 200,000 over coming months.

Haiti. Two men were killed Monday in northern Haiti in clashes with United Nations peacekeepers, as anger turned to violence over a cholera outbreak that has claimed nearly 1,000 lives, officials said.

The body of a 20-year-old man was found in front of a base of the UN Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) in Quartier-Morin, on the outskirts of the country’s second city of Cap-Haitien, local officials said.

THE toll in an outbreak of cholera in Haiti has surged to 643 deaths with nearly 10,000 people being treated in hospital for the disease, the public health ministry said today.

Yesterday alone, some 46 deaths were registered in the northern region of Artibonite, where the outbreak first occurred and where the town of Gonaives is situated, the ministry said.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – At least 20 people died when Hurricane Tomas brushed past Haiti, more than double the number initially reported, Haiti’s civil protection department said Monday.

Seven others remain missing and dozens were injured. More than 30,000 people remain in shelters and Tomas left nearly 6,000 families homeless. Others, already homeless from the Jan. 12 earthquake, lost their tents.

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) – Earthquake-hit Haiti escaped a fresh disaster threatened by Hurricane Tomas, but the storm caused flooding that killed eight people and increased the contagion threat from a deadly cholera epidemic, the government and aid workers said on Saturday.

Amid widespread relief that the hurricane largely spared crowded camps in the Haitian capital housing 1.3 million quake survivors, the international humanitarian operation was turning its attention back to the two-week-old epidemic, which has killed just over 500 people and sickened more than 7,000.
