Red Alert for Mount Bromo Volcano

Jakarta. Those in the vicinity of Mount Bromo remained on high alert on Wednesday as the East Java administration said it was preparing nearby residents for evacuation if needed.

Syaifullah Yusuf, the province’s deputy governor, said on Wednesday that his administration had prepared Rp 2.5 billion ($280,000) in emergency funding for disaster relief operations.

Yogyakarta. Tens of thousands of villagers have already returned to their homes on the slopes of Mount Merapi after authorities reduced the danger zone around the volcano to up to five kilometers following a slowing of its activities.

Surono, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), said on Friday that the danger zone for Sleman, the hardest-hit district in the Merapi eruptions, had been reduced from 20 kilometers from the crater to between 10 and 15 kilometers.

INDONESIA’S Mount Merapi volcano has killed 273 people since it began erupting late last month, with more than 300,000 people forced to live in makeshift camps.

“The Merapi death toll has reached 273 people. About 300,000 people are still living in temporary shelters,” a disaster management official said, updating the previous toll of 259.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – Indonesia’s most volatile volcano unleashed another cloud of searing gas Saturday as rescuers pulled more bodies from a village smothered a week ago by eruptions, raising the death toll to 240.

The blast followed a similar one the day before. No new deaths have been reported from the latest flows, which were well within the zone that has been evacuated.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian vulcanologist is warning that Mount Merapi (meh-RAH’-pee) could erupt again at any time. It’s been shooting clouds of gas and debris up to 3,000 feet. Ash and pyroclastic flows are pouring down its slopes.

Authorities say more bodies were found today, pushing the death toll from 138 to 141. About 100 people were killed Friday.

Dozens of victims of Indonesia’s erupting Mount Merapi who were killed by heat clouds are to be buried in a mass grave in Yogyakarta an official said.

Indonesia’s most active volcano, also known as the Mountain of Fire, has been erupting since late last month and has so far killed a total of 120 people, including 77 on Friday.

Up to 98 people are feared dead after Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano sent searing clouds of ash down its slopes, setting several village houses ablaze.

Hospital workers said a three-year-old girl was among 11 people killed and more than 50 others were injured when the ash hit Bronggang, a village nine miles (15km) from the volcano’s crater.

Indonesia’s most dangerous volcano showed no sign of tiring Tuesday, belching clouds of black smoke as fiery lava lit up its cauldron. Scientists warned that the slow but deadly eruption could continue for weeks, like a “marathon, not a sprint.”

The activity was accompanied by rumbling at 21 other active volcanos in Indonesia, twice the number usually on the government’s “watch” list, which raised questions about what’s causing the uptick along some of the world’s most volatile fault lines.
