There is a warning the spring locust plague could be the worst on record due to the increasing use of modern farming methods.

A central west New South Wales agronomist says direct drilling to sow crops in the western region has not destroyed the egg beds and the tall, dry pasture will make it almost impossible to detect hatchings.

Forbes district agronomist Graham Falconer says time is running out to check for signs of the pest.

The Australian Plague Locust Commission predicts locust eggs will begin hatching in north-west Victoria from late September, causing millions of dollars of damage to crops.

Sydney University’s Dr Greg Sword says by tracking swarm movement, pesticides to control them can be used more efficiently.

“We are collaborating with the Australian Plague Locust Commission and the Centre for Autonomous Aerial Systems to develop autonomous aerial systems; basically, aerial drones that would be capable of tracking individual insects on the ground as they march in these migratory bands,” he said.

From loner to swarming locust – scientists watched the transformation unfold. It is one of nature’s most radical transformations – the moment a crowd of harmless desert locusts begins to swarm into a devastating plague.

Now scientists from the UK and Australia say they have discovered the trigger – the brain chemical serotonin.
The molecule is best known in humans as a target of anti-depressant drugs. Read More / Watch Video »

Tajikistan has been battling a locust invasion over the past few weeks, but officials say control measures and assistance from the donor community will allow them to combat the outbreak.

“This year the locust invasion started in many parts of the country one month earlier than usual. It started on 14 March in the south, in areas bordering Afghanistan – in 12 districts,” Usarbek Mustafakulov, head of the laboratory unit at the Tajik Research Institute of Protection & Quarantine of Plants, told IRIN on 28 April from the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.
