4 Dead 700 Displaced By Typhoon Goni

MANILA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — At least four people died on Friday and more than 700 people have been displaced due to typhoon Goni (local name Ineng), police and civil defense officials said.

Two of the fatalities were burred by a landslide in north Philippine province of Benguet, said Cordillera regional police spokesperson Cherry Fajardo.

A 10-year-old boy died while his brother, nine, was injured in similar landslide in Sabangan, Mountain Province, said Office of Civil Defense-Cordillera Administrative Region director Alex Uy.

In north province of Ilocos Norte, one person died when a fallen tree hit his motorcycle in Pinili town, said provincial police spokesperson Leonardo Tolentino.

Two people were reported swept by floodwaters along Abra river in Bucay, Abra and one of them was rescued while the other remains missing, said Uy.

Two people were reported missing when they were carried by floodwaters in Solsona, Ilocos Norte and Naguilian, La Union, said Office of Civil Defense-Ilocos region director Melchito Castro.

In Batanes, Efren Cabugan was injured when he was hit by a fallen tree branch in Uyugan town, said Office of Civil Defense Cagayan Valley director Norma Talosig.

Some 145 families or 421 people were evacuated to temporary shelters in Batanes and Cagayan. Around 71 families or 355 people were evacuated in the provinces of Abra, Benguet and Kalinga.
