6.2 Earthquake Hits Chile

AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 6.2 struck off the coast of central Chile toady, not far from the town of Concepcion devastated two years ago by a quake and tsunami, US experts said.

The quake struck at a depth of 19 kilometers (12 miles) and was 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Concepcion, the US Geological Survey said.

Chile has been on edge since a devastating 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010 unleashed a tsunami and killed more than 500 people.

There were no immediate reports however of serious damage or injuries after Monday’s temblor hoewver, according to Chile’s National Emergencies Office.

US seismologists said the quake hit at 1304 (1604 GMT), rattling Chile’s quake-prone Bio Bio region, as well as the areas of Maule, O’Higgins and Araucania.
