7.1 Earthquake South Atlantic – No Tsunami

A powerful and shallow earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 has struck the South Atlantic Ocean, centered far northwest of Ascension Island, seismologists say. No tsunami warnings have been issued.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the tremor at 591 miles northwest of Georgetown, off the African coast, at 8:29 p.m. The quake’s depth was reported at 10 kilometers.

The USGS estimates a low likelihood of casualties or damage from the quake.
