Arsenic Water Linked To Boy’s Death

Police and government agencies are remaining tight-lipped about what may have led to the suspected poisoning of a young man from a Northern Territory cattle station.

Ben Witham died last week in hospital in Adelaide.

A memorial for the 17-year-old will be held today at his home at Mount Bundy Station, 110 kilometres from Darwin.

NT Police are investigating the boy’s death and are preparing a file for the South Australian coroner.

South Australian authorities this week said the teenager had high levels of arsenic in his system.

An NT Government report from 2008 shows several bores in the Mount Bundy area had higher-than-acceptable levels of arsenic, but the department of environment will not say whether it is conducting any tests in response to the death.

However NT WorkSafe has begun preliminary enquiries.
