Earthquake rattles Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan

Sept 24 (AFP) A 5.0 -magnitude earthquake shook Kazakhstan&aposs largest city Almaty today, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, seismologists said.
The epicentre was in a remote region of neighbouring Kyrgyzstan some 135 kilometres southeast of Almaty , according to the US Geological Survey, which put its magnitude at 4.9
The tremor was felt by an AFP correspondent in central Almaty .
The Kazakh state seismological service said there were no reports of casualties or damage.
Although minor earthquakes are common in Central Asia, the most recent major quake to have hit Almaty was in 1911, which measured 10 on the Richter scale and completely destroyed the city.

The underwater quake hit at 2:16 a.m. local time (3:16 a.m. EDT; 0716 GMT) and was centered about 170 miles (275 kilometers) southwest of the tourist resort of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco state, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Jose Trinidad Lopez, director of civil protection in Jalisco state, said that the quake occurred at a depth of about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers).
There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage
