Snowy downpour sets record

Weather experts have labelled a recent heavy downpour in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains as an exceptional rainfall event.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service is still assessing damage caused to trails after heavy rain hit alpine areas early last month.

With tree plantings in Australia’s biggest city Sydney and gardening near its iconic Bondi Beach, hundreds took part Sunday in what organisers say will be the world’s biggest day of climate change action.

The 10/10/10 event known as the “Global Work Party” kicked off in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific and is set to spin its way across the globe via more than 7,000 community events in 188 countries.

Rising Tide Protestors Arrested

Police in Newcastle have arrested two environmental activists who had tied themselves to machinery in the city’s coal port to protest against the coal industry’s impact on climate change.

More than 50 members of the group Rising Tide Newcastle broke into three coal terminals. Of the group, 36 sat on a huge pile of coal beneath infrastructure that is known as a stacker/reclaimer on Kooragang Island.

Australia expects worst locust plague for decades

The worst locust plague in 30 years is expected to hit regional New South Wales in the coming weeks, and the State Government has begun measures to control the outbreak.

Warmer than usual temperatures in the west have experts predicting that locusts will hatch in vast numbers around Warren, Coonamble, Brewarrina and Bourke by mid-August.

There is a warning the spring locust plague could be the worst on record due to the increasing use of modern farming methods.

A central west New South Wales agronomist says direct drilling to sow crops in the western region has not destroyed the egg beds and the tall, dry pasture will make it almost impossible to detect hatchings.

Forbes district agronomist Graham Falconer says time is running out to check for signs of the pest.

The smallest Pacific island nations, some of which fear being swamped by rising sea levels due to climate change, said Tuesday they had seen little of the global funding promised to combat the problem.

Meeting in Port Vila ahead of a broader two-day Pacific Islands Forum which begins Wednesday, the leaders of some of the world’s tiniest states admitted their voice on the issue was often lost.

Activists stage rooftop protest at Qld Parliament

There has been a security breach at Parliament House in Brisbane, with protesters getting through security to unfurl a large banner from the roof.

A rally organised by Friends of the Earth drew hundreds of farming families and environmentalists to Queensland Parliament.

They called for Premier Anna Bligh to come outside to hear their concerns about coal mining and extractive gas industries.

The Australian Plague Locust Commission predicts locust eggs will begin hatching in north-west Victoria from late September, causing millions of dollars of damage to crops.

Sydney University’s Dr Greg Sword says by tracking swarm movement, pesticides to control them can be used more efficiently.

“We are collaborating with the Australian Plague Locust Commission and the Centre for Autonomous Aerial Systems to develop autonomous aerial systems; basically, aerial drones that would be capable of tracking individual insects on the ground as they march in these migratory bands,” he said.

A new study says Australia’s water supply problems are only going to get worse as the population soars towards 45 million by mid-century.

The report by Australia’s major water utilities estimates demand for water will increase by almost 1 trillion litres by 2056 based on a population of 31 million people.

A WILD storm in southeast Queensland on Friday afternoon has left more than 8,000 homes without power.

The hardest hit area was the Sunshine Coast and Caboolture/Redcliffe area where some 5000 homes were affected.

There’s been a record drain on electricity as people in Perth tried to escape the heat today.

The temperature in the city hit 42.7C about 12:40pm (AWST).

Western Power says air conditioners and big-screen TVs are to blame for the spike in electricity consumption.
