Merapi Artist Sells Ash as Souvenirs

JAKARTA, Indonesia — An Indonesian artist is selling tourist souvenirs of ash from the country’s most volatile volcano to raise money for victims of its eruptions.

The English-language daily The Jakarta Globe reported Monday that Agus Budi Setiawan is selling volcano souvenirs – small clear bottles containing volcanic ash – for $1 per bottle.

Indonesia Downgrades Merapi Alert

Indonesian scientists have downgraded the alert status of Mount Merapi from its highest level after it killed more than 320 people in a series of violent eruptions that started in late October.

“The decision was taken this morning at 9:00am (local time) as its eruption activities continue to slow down,” the head of the vulcanology office in Yogyakarta, Subandrio, said.

Yogyakarta. Mayor Herry Zudianto on Tuesday declared the city was under disaster emergency status after lahar, or cold volcanic mud, from Mount Merapi flowed through the Code River and inundated hundreds of houses, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.

“This is only to help us cope with floods and refugees in a more comprehensive manner. It does not mean the city is unsafe to visit,” the mayor said.

(Reuters) – Tens of thousands of Indonesians who fled their homes to escape an erupting volcano have been offered the chance to start anew on a less populated island, authorities said on Tuesday.

Around 60,000 people are living in temporary shelter on densely populated Java island after Mount Merapi Volcano erupted last month and forced nearly half a million people to flee their homes while destroying crops, buildings, roads and bridges.

Yogyakarta. Hundreds of people in Indonesia have fled their homes to escape fast-moving mudflows streaming down the slopes of the country’s most volatile volcano.

Disaster official Slamet Sugiono says those affected live along the banks of the Code River, which flows from Mount Merapi into the heart of Yogyakarta, a bustling city 20 miles (30 kilometers) away.

Farmers Get Cash for Snake Fruit

Jakarta. Following the launch of its “cash for cows” program to compensate farmers who lost their livestock in the Mount Merapi eruptions, the government is now rolling out a similar scheme for snake fruit farmers.

Fatchul Hadi, secretary of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said on Monday that the agency had allocated Rp 8 billion to buy from farmers the damaged trees found on the fertile slopes of the mountain.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) – The number of deaths caused by recent eruptions at Indonesia’s most volatile volcano has risen to 304.

Slamet Sugiono from the National Disaster Management Agency said Sunday the toll climbed after some victims succumbed to severe burns and illnesses linked to the eruption. Also, more ash-buried bodies have been found on the slopes of Mount Merapi.

Indonesia’s Yogyakarta airport, which had been closed for about two weeks by the eruption of the Mount Merapi volcano, has reopened for operations, officials said.

Merapi, which means “Mountain of Fire”, has killed 283 people since it began erupting last month and more than 270,000 are still living in temporary shelters.

Yogyakarta. Tens of thousands of villagers have already returned to their homes on the slopes of Mount Merapi after authorities reduced the danger zone around the volcano to up to five kilometers following a slowing of its activities.

Surono, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), said on Friday that the danger zone for Sleman, the hardest-hit district in the Merapi eruptions, had been reduced from 20 kilometers from the crater to between 10 and 15 kilometers.

INDONESIA’S Mount Merapi volcano has killed 273 people since it began erupting late last month, with more than 300,000 people forced to live in makeshift camps.

Carrying their belongings on motorcycles and in pickup trucks, more than 30,000 people left shelters after the government reduced the size of the exclusion zone around the volcano in some districts.
