Cyclone Heads for West Australia

A flood warning for Western Australia’s West Kimberley region has been lifted but the Pilbara coast has been put on cyclone alert as a tropical low approaches the coast.

The low is moving quickly across the North-West Kimberley bringing rainfall approaching 100 mm.

The system is expected to cross the coast this evening and intensify as it moves over the water, forming a category one cyclone tomorrow morning.

That is expected to bring heavy rain and gale force winds to some parts of the Pilbara tomorrow.

A blue alert, the lowest level of cyclone alert, is in place between Wallal and Fortescue roadhouse.

Residents of Port Hedland, South Hedland, Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham and Dampier are being urged to clear up loose material and prepare emergency kits.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority’s Lee Vallance says it would be unwise to drink too much during tonight’s new year’s eve celebrations.

“There maybe a need to travel so it’s not a good idea to drink. Once you’ve been in a few cyclones, cyclones can be dangerous so it’s good to keep a clear head,” he said.
