The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) says the state’s flood crisis has cost the sector about $2.3 billion in lost sales.

Mine operators have been working to remove water from flooded sites as rail lines begin to reopen.

QRC chief executive Michael Roche says there has been a significant drop in production since early December.

“We have about 57 producing coal mines in the state,” he said.

“We estimate that only about 15 per cent of those are in full production, about 60 per cent are operating under restrictions, a lot of that to do with inundation of water, and a further 25 per cent are really yet to resume any sort of normal operations.”
