Floods kill six in central Vietnam

Hanoi. (AFP) – Floods caused by heavy weekend rain killed six people in central Vietnam, the government said on Monday.

Ha Tinh province recorded the worst toll with four people dead, while neighbouring Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces reported one each, said the national flood and storm control department in Hanoi.

At least 13,300 people in Ha Tinh were evacuated to safer areas after 728 millimetres (29 inches) of rain fell, the agency said.

State-linked media said thousands of houses have been inundated while transport in some areas was disrupted by flooding.

Vietnam is frequently hit by tropical storms and flooding at this time of the year.
