Biosecurity SA says locusts have now taken to the wing in South Australia’s north and are being seen in the Port Augusta and Port Pirie region.
Senior entomologist Ken Henry says there are only low density swarms in the region and landowners should not be alarmed at this stage.
He says locusts are not expected to reach the flying stages in the Tatiara region for another few weeks.
Mr Henry says the aerial spraying program could never eliminate all locusts and the campaign has significantly reduced numbers.
“We are looking at a management program, not an eradication program, so yes there’s always going to be a few adult locusts either in the cities or in the mid-north or even further south, so you know hopefully we’ve done enough to manage the population,” he said.
