Response to Pakistan flood disaster ‘pitifully slow’

Delegates at a United Nations conference in Melbourne have called for the international community to do more to help Pakistan deal with its flood crisis.

Non-government organisations (NGO) from 70 countries are attending the conference to work on ways to advance global health.

World Vision, Oxfam and the Fred Hollows Foundation used the final day to call for a two-year moratorium on Pakistan’s debt repayments.

World Vision chief executive Tim Costello says the world’s response to the flood disaster has been pitifully slow.

“This disaster, a slow-moving tsunami affecting 20 million people, is potentially as big, if not bigger, and we haven’t responded. That’s why it’s so urgent to get this on the UN and the NGO agenda,” he said.
