A MODERATE 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck in Indonesian waters overnight but there were no immediate reports of damage, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake struck at 10.10pm local time (1.10am AEDT) in the Molucca Sea around 200km northeast of Manado on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island at a depth of 70km.
No tsunami warning was issued.
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia earlier yesterday evening, beneath the sea 106km south-east of Kaimana in West Papua province, but likewise caused no recorded damage.
Indonesia is battling the aftermath of a tsunami which killed more than 400 people in the western Mentawai islands last week and an erupting volcano which has killed 36 people in central Java.
The archipelago of 240 million people stretches from the Pacific to the Indian oceans and is studded with active volcanoes and fringed by shifting continental plates.
