Thieves Target Fukushima Homes

In Asia, News Headlines

Japanese police say there have been hundreds of burglaries inside the exclusion zone around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant.

Japan’s national police agency says since the March disaster more than 700 burglaries have been reported within the 20-kilometre no-go radius of the Fukushima plant.

That figure is 25-times higher than normal.

Police believe burglars have looted deserted homes and shops, making their way into the evacuated zone without permission.

In the tsunami-hit regions to the north of Fukushima, however, the number of burglaries in the same period fell compared to a year ago.
