GOLDEN – For three weeks, 9NEWS has been telling you about earthquakes under Yellowstone National Park.

It is one of the most intense quake swarms ever recorded in the park’s history and it still shows no sign of slowing down.

In fact, the activity increased during a six-hour period last night. During that time, two quakes, both nearly magnitude 3’s happened within a few minutes of each other. Read More / Watch Video »

In various places around the world are what are known as super volcanoes.

One super volcano that is attracting a lot of nervous attention at the moment is in Yellowstone National Park.
A number of changes are happening to the local terrain for example; Norris Basin nearby has been raised up 35 inches since 1923.
One end of Yellowstone Lake is now 100 feet higher than the other end, causing flooding.

Trees in the park are dying as their roots cook in the heat. There is no doubt that Yellowstone will erupt again and scientists tell us that this eruption is overdue. Read More / Watch Video »

A swarm of earthquakes that began on Sunday at Yellowstone National Park continued this morning and the magnitude of the tremors is increasing.

As of 9:20 a.m. today, 424 earthquakes had been recorded in the swarm with the highest tremor at a magnitude of 3.3. So far, scientists state that although the tremors seem to be normal tectonic activity, they will continue to monitor the situation. Read More / Watch Video »

‘Earthquake swarm’ continues to rock Yellowstone

The swarm of more than 500 tremors is the largest series of back-to-back quakes to hit the area in years, according to scientists and follows recent quakes on the heels of a series of tremors earlier in January.

“The December 2008 earthquake sequence is the most intense in this area for some years,” said the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. “No damage has been reported within Yellowstone National Park, nor would any be expected from earthquakes of this size.” Read More / Watch Video »

In the recent documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”, Senator Al Gore pointed out that the Greenland ice sheet is melting faster than anyone ever expected. More than this, once it has gone sea levels could rise by up to twenty feet. This would submerge Shanghai and displace about 40 million people crippling China’s economy.

The United States is also in line for catastrophic climate events. According to the Global Meltdown Domino Effect predictions, the eastern seaboard of the United States will be hit by a mega tsunami created by the eruption of Cumbre Vieja in the Canaries, and also will be subjected to a three feet deep blanket of ash caused by the eruption of Yellowstone. Yellowstone’s caldera rising

Posted by redsky On April - 6 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

A geologist says some parts of the continually shifting, collapsed volcano at the center of the park are swelling unusually fast. Bob Smith, one of the leading researchers into Yellowstone·s geology, presented some of his findings at the American Geological Union meeting in San Francisco this week.
Smith and other geologists from the University of Utah are particularly interested in two subterranean lava domes deep beneath the Yellowstone caldera.
“We’ve gone to this really pronounced, and I would say unprecedented, uplift of the caldera,” he said.

But he said any talk of an eruption would be far-fetched.
In fact, it’s typical for Yellowstone·s caldera to rise and fall. Scientists say it·s been happening for at least 15,000 years, with some shifts of more than 10 feet. Read More / Watch Video »
