6.3 Quake hits Papua New Guinea

A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Sunday, seismologists said, but there was no immediate tsunami warning or reports of damage.

The quake hit around three kilometres (two miles) off the west coast of the the island of New Britain, at 1:09 am (1509 GMT
today) at a depth of 192 kilometres (119 miles), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

3 Quakes hit Mariana Islands, 14 aftershocks

Hagatna – In a 24-hour period, the region of the Mariana Islands, near Guam, experienced three powerful earthquakes ranging from 6.3-magnitude to 6.9-magnitude. The region also has witnessed 14 aftershocks.

Earthquakes have been the dominant natural disaster for the year 2010.

Magnitude 6 Quake hits Vanuatu: No damage

CANBERRA, Australia – The U.S Geological Survey says a magnitude 6 earthquake has shaken Vanuatu — a day after a stronger quake off the South Pacific island nation generated a small tsunami.

The Wednesday quake was too small to cause a tsunami and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. A statement says the quake’s epicenter was 46 miles (73 kilometers) northwest of the capital Port Vila and 25 miles (41 kilometers) deep.

6.4 Quake hits Papua New Guinea

A STRONG, 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck deep off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said. No Pacific Ocean tsunami or damage was expected.

The quake hit at 5.15pm (AEST), 110km southeast of Madang, a province on the northern coast of mainland PNG, the USGS said.

4.3 Earthquake jolts northwest Haiti

A magnitude-4.3 earthquake today jolted northwest Haiti, reported the U.S. Geological Survey. According to the report the light tremor shook the sea-floor 15 miles west of the coastal city of Gonaives in the early morning. The quake did not damage anything. Talking to reporters, Gonaives residents said that they felt the quake but no one was injured and buildings were not affected.

It may be recalled that a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake had hit Haiti six months ago, killing more than 230,000 people and leaving hundreds and thousands homeless. Read More / Watch Video »

Two Earthquakes hit Ireland

Two earthquakes have been recorded in Co Donegal within the past 36 hours.

They come less than three weeks after an earthquake measuring 1.6 was recorded in the northeast of the county.

The latest events on Tuesday night and yesterday morning measured 1.5 and 1.7 respectively and were felt by residents in the Termon and Milford areas, north of Letterkenny. Read More / Watch Video »

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CBS) ? Gangs of men armed with machetes were seen looting parts of Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Jan. 14, 2010.

The earthquake aftermath has brought out the best and worst of the people of Haiti.

Much like the days after Hurricane Katrina, looting has become a problem very quickly.

The looting appears to be isolated to Port-au-Prince’s old commercial center. It’s an area that under normal circumstances would be filled with many shops, markets and a few homes. But on Wednesday it was a completely different scene. Read More / Watch Video »

International relief to quake-devastated Haiti was reduced to a trickle this morning after the capital’s airport was overwhelmed by a sudden influx of aid planes, as the country’s President said 7,000 victims had already been buried in a mass grave.

The dangerous bottleneck at the airport is prolonging the suffering for an estimated 3 million people injured and made homeless in the earthquake.

6.3 Magnitude quake strikes near Solomon Islands

A strong earthquake has shaken the South Pacific near the Solomon Islands, just days after a large earthquake and tsunami hit the country.

No tsunami watch was issued after Saturday’s quake.

The 6.3 magnitude quake struck 90 miles south-east of the provincial capital Gizo at a depth of 22 miles, the US Geological Survey reported.

On Monday, a magnitude-7.2 quake sent a tsunami up to 10 feet high crashing into the shores of Rendova Island and nearby Tetepare Island. No serious injuries were reported. Read More / Watch Video »
